The VET Extension Act of 2024 expands educational benefits for veterans and active-duty service members who use Post-9/11 GI Bill assistance. The bill provides up to 15 additional months of education benefits for veterans who exhaust their current entitlement while taking remedial or developmental courses needed to complete their degree programs at colleges and universities. It also allows service members who initially couldn't transfer their benefits to dependents because they had no family at the time to later transfer unused benefits once they have eligible dependents. The legislation addresses a gap where veterans taking foundational courses to prepare for college-level work run out of benefits before finishing their degrees, and it increases flexibility for active-duty personnel to share their education benefits with family members even if circumstances change after they first became eligible.
