This bill establishes a grant program through the National Science Foundation to increase participation of women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ individuals, and people with disabilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. The legislation authorizes $15 million annually for fiscal years 2024 through 2028 to fund eligible organizations carrying out activities such as mentoring programs, internships, online workshops, K-12 outreach, and faculty recruitment initiatives. The bill responds to documented disparities showing that women earn significantly fewer degrees in engineering and computer science, Black and Hispanic Americans are underrepresented in STEM careers, and women leave STEM professions at much higher rates than men, with even lower retention rates for women of color. Eligible entities would compete for grants to design and implement programs specifically targeting these underrepresented groups to improve both their entry into and persistence within STEM careers.
