ASSUMING FIRST SPONSORSHIP - Mr. Lieu asked unanimous consent that he may hereafter be considered as the first sponsor of H.R. 7840, a bill originally introduced by Representative Jackson Lee, for the purpose of adding cosponsors and requesting reprintings pursuant to clause 7 of rule XII. Agreed to without objection.
The ProTECT Act of 2024 would ban trophy hunting of both endangered and threatened species in the United States and prohibit importing trophies of these animals into the country. Currently, the Endangered Species Act protects endangered species from trophy hunting but does not automatically extend those protections to threatened species, leaving a gap this bill would close. The legislation also prevents the federal government from issuing permits that would allow trophy hunting or trophy imports of any listed species. The bill's supporters argue that trophy hunting of imperiled species harms conservation by removing genetically important individuals from populations, fuels illegal wildlife trafficking networks worth up to $20 billion annually, and undermines overall wildlife protection efforts. The legislation does include an exception allowing antique trophies to remain legal.
