The Iran China Accountability Act of 2024 would impose strict conditions on any future U.S. negotiations or agreements with Iran regarding its nuclear program. Before the president could even begin negotiations, he would need to certify to Congress that Iran has terminated all financial and military agreements with China, ended support to groups like Hamas, destroyed its chemical weapons, and that China has ceased imprisoning Uyghurs. Any Iran nuclear agreement would need to include complete destruction of Iran's nuclear, missile, and chemical weapons capabilities and could not proceed without Senate approval as a formal treaty. The bill also requires the State Department to report to Congress on how any proposed agreement complies with these conditions before it can be submitted to the Senate. The legislation essentially blocks the current administration's efforts to rejoin or create a new version of the 2015 nuclear deal until multiple geopolitical and human rights demands are met.
