The exemption, originally issued in 2022, applies only to drivers operating school buses within their home state. The bill directs the Secretary of Transportation to gather public feedback within 120 days on whether this exemption should be made permanent and of unlimited duration. States can use existing federal highway safety funding to help cover any costs associated with implementing this extended exemption. This legislation essentially allows school bus driver training and licensing to continue without requiring the pre-trip inspection skills test for nearly four more years.
