This bill creates a federal grant program to address staffing shortages in the medical examiner and coroner system across the United States. Eligible recipients include accredited graduate medical education programs offering forensic pathology fellowships, publicly funded medical examiner and coroner offices, and forensic toxicology laboratories. The bill prioritizes geographic distribution of funding with special attention to rural areas and communities experiencing higher rates of opioid-related deaths. Grants can be used to pay for fellowships, salaries, continuing education, and certification costs, with at least 40 forensic pathology fellowships funded each year.
