The Lead Free Forests Act of 2024 would require the U.S. Forest Service to ban all lead ammunition on national forest lands and waters within one year of enactment. The bill aims to address health risks from lead exposure, including dangers to wildlife like raptors and scavengers that ingest spent ammunition, as well as risks to people who consume hunted animals shot with lead rounds. Hunters and recreational shooters would be required to use only certified nonlead ammunition on Forest Service lands, though exceptions would apply to law enforcement, military personnel, and government officials performing non-wildlife duties. Violations would result in fines ranging from up to $500 for the first offense to between $1,000 and $5,000 for subsequent violations. The Forest Service would be responsible for establishing and maintaining a publicly available list of approved nonlead ammunition types.
