The Lead-Safe Housing for Kids Act of 2024 strengthens protections for young children living in federally-assisted housing by requiring landlords to test for lead-based paint hazards when families with children under age 6 move in or renew their leases. The bill applies to housing receiving federal mortgage insurance, rental assistance, or other federal housing aid. Under the new rules, property owners must complete risk assessments within 15 days of a family's lease approval or during routine inspections, and must eliminate any identified hazards within 30 days with no extensions allowed. If hazards cannot be promptly fixed, families with young children have the right to relocate immediately to safe housing constructed after 1978 or to other lead-free units without losing assistance, facing penalties, or waiting on housing lists. The Department of Housing and Urban Development must write regulations implementing these requirements within one year, and Congress has authorized funding for the program through 2029.
