The SHUSH Act (Silencers Help Us Save Hearing Act) would remove federal restrictions on firearm silencers by reclassifying them as ordinary firearm accessories rather than heavily regulated items under the National Firearms Act. Currently, silencers are subject to a federal tax, registration requirements, and licensing procedures similar to machine guns; this bill would eliminate those requirements for anyone legally acquiring or possessing a silencer under federal law. The legislation would also prevent states and local governments from imposing their own taxes, registration requirements, or recordkeeping rules on silencers, preempting existing state regulations. The bill takes effect upon enactment, except for a provision related to silencer transfers that would apply retroactively to transfers made after October 22, 2015. The measure was introduced in May 2024 and referred to the House Ways and Means Committee and Judiciary Committee.
