The Servicemember Equal Recognition and Transition Support Act directs the Secretary of Defense to study how well military-trained servicemembers are able to transfer their professional credentials to civilian jobs. Within 180 days of the bill's enactment, the Defense Department must submit a report to Congress, developed with input from the Veterans Affairs and Labor Departments, that examines how many veterans successfully transfer military credentials to civilian employment and identifies which certifications are most commonly used, such as airplane mechanic certifications. The report will also assess what barriers veterans face when trying to get their military skills recognized by state licensing authorities for civilian work. This legislation affects current and former servicemembers seeking civilian employment after military service and builds on data from a previous 2018 Defense Department credentialing study. The bill does not include new funding and requires only a reporting requirement with a six-month deadline.
