To direct the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out a demonstration project to allow Tribal entities to purchase agricultural commodities under the commodity supplemental food program, and for other purposes.
This bill establishes a demonstration project allowing federally recognized Indian tribes and tribal organizations to purchase their own agricultural commodities for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which provides food assistance to low-income individuals. Currently, the federal government selects and provides the food packages to tribes; this legislation would give tribes more control over what foods are included, with the ability to choose locally relevant or culturally significant agricultural products that meet nutritional standards. The bill directs the Secretary of Agriculture to select participating tribes based on their ability to successfully administer the program and manage commodity purchases, working in consultation with tribal entities and the Interior Department. The demonstration project is authorized with $5 million in funding to remain available until spent, plus $1.2 million annually from 2025 through 2028 to staff and administer the tribal contracts. The Secretary must report to Congress annually on the project's progress and activities.
