The Climate Justice Act of 2024 establishes a Climate Justice Working Group to advise the federal government on transitioning to a clean, climate-resilient economy while ensuring the benefits reach disadvantaged communities. The working group will comprise at least 22 members, including representatives from frontline community organizations, various federal agencies, local and state governments, and tribal governments, with expertise in climate and environmental justice. The group's primary responsibilities include developing criteria and metrics to identify climate-burdened communities and establishing guiding principles to ensure federal climate initiatives prioritize these communities and do not worsen existing environmental or health disparities. The working group must publish a draft report, hold at least four public hearings across different regions, and accept public comment for a minimum of 120 days before issuing a final report within one year. Within 90 days of the final report, the President must direct all relevant federal agencies to incorporate these criteria, metrics, and principles into their climate and environmental programs and report to Congress on their implementation efforts.
