Referred to the Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce.
The DASHBOARD Act of 2024 requires companies that collect and profit from consumer data to be more transparent about what they're doing with that information. Companies that operate major online services and data brokerage operations must tell users every 90 days what their personal data is worth and how the company uses their information beyond providing the basic service. Users would gain the right to delete their data through a simple setting, though companies can keep it if required by law, needed for legal defense, or essential for detecting fraud and security threats. For publicly traded companies that are large data operators, the bill requires them to disclose in their financial reports to investors the total value of user data they hold, the sources of that data, and revenues earned from selling or sharing it. The Securities and Exchange Commission has one year to write detailed rules for these disclosures and must develop standardized methods for calculating data value across different companies, with a full report to Congress due within three years.
