This bill authorizes Congress to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Dr. Joseph B. Kirsner in recognition of his World War II service and his pioneering contributions to the field of gastroenterology. Dr. Kirsner, who lived from 1909 to 2012, was a renowned physician who conducted groundbreaking research on peptic ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, and related conditions, trained over 200 medical fellows, and authored more than 750 scientific papers and 18 textbooks that became leading educational materials in his field. After the medal is awarded, it will be permanently displayed at the University of Chicago's Joseph B. Kirsner library, though Congress encourages the university to loan it for display at other events and locations associated with Dr. Kirsner. The Treasury Department will design and strike the gold medal with Dr. Kirsner's image and name, and may also produce and sell duplicate bronze versions to cover production costs. No specific funding amount is allocated in the bill, as costs will be charged to the U.S. Mint Public Enterprise Fund.
