The Protecting America's Working Dogs Act of 2024 establishes a grant program administered by the Attorney General to help pay for medical expenses of retired military and law enforcement dogs. The program will award grants of up to $575,000 per year to nonprofit organizations that specialize in caring for these working dogs and providing financial assistance to their owners or handlers. The grants are available for five fiscal years beginning one year after the law takes effect, and eligible nonprofits must spend at least 70 percent of their funds directly on medical care for retired working dogs. Covered medical expenses include veterinary visits, procedures, diagnostic tests, and medications for dogs that previously worked for federal agencies including the Department of Defense, FBI, TSA, and other law enforcement organizations, as well as service dogs owned by veterans or retired federal law enforcement officers. The Attorney General must report annually to Congress on how many dogs received assistance and the average cost per dog treated.
