This bill establishes a comprehensive federal program to increase research, prevention, and awareness efforts related to liver disease and liver cancer in the United States. The legislation directs the National Institutes of Health to expand research on liver cancer and related conditions like hepatitis B and C, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis, with a special focus on communities disproportionately affected including Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, Hispanic communities, and African immigrants. The bill authorizes $45 million annually from 2025 through 2029 for liver cancer and disease research grants, $90 million annually for prevention activities including screenings and vaccinations, and $10 million annually for public awareness campaigns. Additionally, the legislation renames the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to include liver diseases, elevates the existing Liver Disease Research Branch to a full Division of Liver Diseases within the institute, and establishes new national data systems and information clearinghouses to track liver disease cases and disseminate health information.
