Referred to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
The Financial Fitness Act directs the Secretary of Education to create a free, online personal finance education portal within three years to help federal student loan borrowers make better financial decisions. The portal will provide information on core financial concepts like budgeting and saving, managing student loan repayment options, understanding loan terms, and navigating retirement accounts and tax benefits. The legislation is designed to address the fact that nearly 45 million Americans owe an average of $37,338 in federal student loans, with particularly high default rates among Black, Hispanic, Latino, Native American, and first-generation college graduates. The bill authorizes $5 million in funding over four years (fiscal years 2024-2027) and requires the education department to consult with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Treasury Department, and Internal Revenue Service in developing the portal and reviewing its usage every three years.
