Referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and in addition to the Committees on the Judiciary, and Financial Services, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The BRAVE Burma Act extends and strengthens existing U.S. sanctions against Burma's military government. The bill extends the sunset date of the 2022 Burma Unified through Rigorous Military Accountability Act from 8 years to 10 years, ensuring sanctions remain in place longer. It also requires the President to assess and report to Congress every year for seven years on whether additional sanctions should be imposed on Burmese state-owned enterprises, the Myanma Economic Bank, and foreign companies operating in Burma's jet fuel sector. The legislation creates a new U.S. Special Coordinator for Burmese Democracy position, appointed by the President with Senate confirmation, tasked with developing diplomatic strategies to promote human rights and restore civilian government. Additionally, the bill directs the U.S. Treasury to oppose any increase in Burma's voting power at the International Monetary Fund while the military's State Administration Council controls the country, though the President can waive this requirement if deemed in the national interest.
