The IHS Provider Integrity Act would strengthen oversight of healthcare providers working for the Indian Health Service by requiring better communication with state medical boards. When the Indian Health Service investigates a licensed healthcare provider's professional conduct, the agency must notify the relevant state medical board within 14 days and submit any investigation records within 14 days of generating them. The bill also requires the Indian Health Service to check with state medical boards during the hiring process for new healthcare providers, asking for information about any license violations over the past 20 years and any disciplinary settlements. Additionally, the Indian Health Service must proactively share detailed information with state medical boards whenever one of their healthcare providers violates licensing requirements. Within 180 days of the bill's enactment, the Indian Health Service must report to Congress on how well it is currently reviewing healthcare providers who leave, transfer, retire, or are fired to identify any concerns about their medical practices.
