This bill requires the Indian Health Service (IHS) to create a uniform, centralized system for credentialing health professionals across all IHS facilities within one year of enactment. Currently, each IHS facility uses its own credentialing procedures, but once a health professional is approved through the new centralized system, they will be authorized to work at any IHS facility nationwide. The bill exempts health professionals already credentialed under existing IHS policies from re-credentialing until their normal renewal date arrives, and it requires the IHS to consult with Indian tribes during development of the system. The legislation also allows the IHS to use or expand an existing credentialing system if one is already in place, and requires the agency to review the system every five years to ensure compliance.
