This bill creates a new educational assistance program for members of the District of Columbia National Guard to help pay for college and vocational training. Eligible members who have completed initial service and agree to continue serving in the D.C. National Guard can receive up to $10,000 per year for tuition, plus $500 annually each for books and laboratory fees at accredited institutions. Members must be enrolled at least part-time, maintain satisfactory academic progress, and continue performing their duties in the National Guard to keep receiving assistance. The program is designed to encourage both new enlistments and retention of current Guard members. The bill authorizes whatever funding is necessary to operate the program, and those who fail to serve their agreed-upon commitment period or meet eligibility requirements will be required to repay the assistance they received.
