To amend title 18, United States Code, to increase the penalty for fraudulent misrepresentation about the receipt of a military decoration or medal, and for other purposes.
This bill strengthens penalties for fraudulently claiming to have received military medals or decorations. It increases the maximum prison sentence from one year to three years for people who falsely represent themselves as recipients of military medals, the Congressional Medal of Honor, or combat badges. The legislation also requires the Attorney General, working with the Veterans Affairs Inspector General and other relevant agencies, to study within 90 days how people fraudulently obtain monetary or government benefits through false claims about military honors, and to report findings and policy recommendations to Congress within 180 days. The bill affects anyone who might falsely claim military service honors, and aims to crack down on stolen valor while identifying broader patterns of fraud involving military benefits.
