The Chronic Condition Copay Elimination Act would require health insurance plans to cover additional preventive care and screenings for people with chronic conditions at no cost to patients. The bill covers eight conditions: heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, hypertension, asthma, liver disease, bleeding disorders, and depression, though the list can be expanded by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Covered preventive services must be low-cost and have strong medical evidence showing they prevent worsening of the chronic condition or development of related complications. The Secretary would review and update the list of covered services every three years, with changes taking effect in the following plan year. The law would apply to group health plans and individual insurance coverage beginning one year after enactment.
