Referred to the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and in addition to the Committees on Energy and Commerce, Natural Resources, and Education and the Workforce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Marine Energy Technologies Acceleration Act establishes a one billion dollar Marine Energy Acceleration Fund to speed up development and deployment of technologies that generate electricity from ocean waves, tides, and currents. The legislation directs the Department of Energy to fund at least twenty demonstration projects that convert marine energy into power for local communities and power grids, prioritizing projects that serve rural, remote, disadvantaged, and tribal communities. The bill also allocates funding for research and development of marine energy systems, assessment of ocean energy resources at fifty potential sites across U.S. waters, workforce training programs, and improvements to the permitting process for marine energy projects. A federal task force must submit a report to Congress within one year identifying regulatory barriers and recommending ways to streamline approvals for marine energy development. The funding remains available until spent, supporting what sponsors describe as a clean energy industry with potential to provide power to coastal communities and support ocean-based scientific research.
