The Veteran Caregiver Reeducation, Reemployment, and Retirement Act expands benefits and support services for family members who serve as primary caregivers for veterans. The bill extends medical care coverage for caregivers for 180 days after they leave the caregiver program, provides employment assistance including certification reimbursement up to $1,000 per person and access to job training programs, and adds bereavement counseling services. Caregivers who are dismissed for fraud or abuse are excluded from these extended benefits. The legislation also requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to study the feasibility of returnship programs for former caregivers, explore ways to hire former caregivers at VA facilities to address staffing needs, and examine options for establishing retirement savings programs for caregivers. An independent audit by the Comptroller General is required within two years to assess how well the VA supports caregivers transitioning to retirement or new employment.
