This bill directs the Department of Defense to speed up cleanup efforts for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS, which are toxic chemicals that contaminate groundwater at military installations and National Guard facilities. Within 180 days of the bill's enactment, the Defense Secretary must evaluate all affected military sites to identify potential cleanup actions and prioritize facilities based on risks to human health and the environment. The bill requires the Secretary to publicly report findings and cleanup schedules within 270 days and mandates that alternative drinking water be provided to households and communities within 30 days of discovering PFAS contamination in underground sources of drinking water. The legislation also grants the Defense Secretary emergency authority to expedite water provision and use emergency contracting procedures if public health is immediately threatened by PFAS releases.
