This bill establishes a grant program called the Safe Housing Assistance Program for Veterans, which provides federal funding to help eligible veteran homeowners pay for critical home repairs and maintenance. The program will award $15 million annually from fiscal years 2025 through 2028 to ten county community development agencies, which will then distribute competitive subgrants of up to $15,000 each to eligible veterans for repairs such as roof work, plumbing fixes, electrical systems, heating systems, and safety improvements like locks and smoke detectors. To qualify, veterans must own and occupy their home for at least a year, be current on property taxes and homeowners insurance, and have annual household incomes below specified limits ranging from $53,100 for a single person to $100,150 for households of eight or more. The Department of Housing and Urban Development must establish the program within one year of the bill's enactment and submit a report to Congress five years later describing which counties participated and what projects were completed.
