Referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, and in addition to the Committees on Financial Services, and Appropriations, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Focus on Protection Act would transfer the United States Secret Service's investigative responsibilities over financial crimes and payment systems to the Department of the Treasury. Specifically, the Treasury Department would take over investigations of currency counterfeiting, financial fraud such as credit card and debit card fraud, and cybercrimes affecting financial systems. The bill's proponents argue this transfer would allow the Secret Service to concentrate on its core protective mission for the President and other officials while giving the Treasury Department, which has greater financial expertise, responsibility for investigating financial crimes. The legislation would transfer all related personnel, assets, contracts, and funding from the Secret Service to the Treasury Department and would take effect 180 days after enactment to ensure continuity of operations during the transition.
