This bill allows the Food and Drug Administration to share detailed food safety information with state, local, tribal, and territorial health authorities to help them protect public health. The FDA can now share unredacted data on foodborne illness surveillance, laboratory testing results, inspection findings, recall information, and consumer complaints without waiting for formal agreements. State and local authorities receiving this information must keep it confidential and cannot share it further without FDA permission, except when necessary to contain an outbreak or conduct a recall. The bill also extends the funding period for FDA food safety grants from three years to five years and makes continued funding contingent on successful program evaluations after the first year. This legislation aims to improve coordination between federal and state food safety agencies to respond more quickly to potential health threats.
