Referred to the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, and in addition to the Committees on the Judiciary, and Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill reauthorizes and expands the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program, a federal initiative that coordinates law enforcement efforts across multiple agencies to combat drug trafficking in designated high-crime regions. The legislation provides 400 million dollars annually for the program from fiscal years 2026 through 2031. Starting in 2026, the bill requires the Director of National Drug Control Policy to identify and develop "promising practices"—effective strategies and methods—that help local, state, and federal agencies work together more efficiently on drug-related crimes, including investigations of overdose deaths, coordination on cases involving firearms, and implementation of evidence-based substance abuse prevention programs. These successful practices would then be shared across all participating HIDTA regions nationwide. The bill affects federal drug enforcement agencies, state and local law enforcement, and communities struggling with drug trafficking and overdose issues.
