The AIxBio Defense Sandbox Act directs the Department of Defense to create a plan for a secure computing environment where researchers can test artificial intelligence systems trained on biological data and develop related defense products. The program, called the AIxBio sandbox, will focus on projects at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biotechnology with military applications, such as developing medical countermeasures, creating new biological materials for military use, or improving domestic supply chains through biomanufacturing. The Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering will manage the sandbox, select qualifying projects that have shown early success, and establish partnerships between Defense Department laboratories, academic institutions, and private entities to facilitate collaboration and testing. The legislation requires the Under Secretary to submit a detailed plan and briefing to Congress within one year of enactment, including information about how existing Defense Department computing infrastructure will be used, how projects will be selected and funded, and mechanisms for managing intellectual property and resource sharing among participating organizations.
