This bill would amend federal criminal justice law to clarify that the Northern Mariana Islands qualifies as a "State" under the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. The change would make the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa eligible to receive federal criminal justice grants and support programs that are currently available only to states and certain other U.S. territories. The bill, introduced by Representative Sablan and Representative Radewagen in September 2024, was referred to the House Judiciary Committee. The legislation is a technical fix to ensure these U.S. territories have equal access to federal law enforcement funding and resources that help support police training, prosecution, and other criminal justice initiatives.
