The SEEK HELP Act provides legal protections for people who seek emergency medical assistance during drug overdoses. Specifically, the bill protects individuals from criminal prosecution for drug possession when they call 911 or report an overdose to emergency responders, and it shields bystanders from civil lawsuits if they administer overdose-reversal drugs like naloxone in good faith. These protections do not apply if someone is sought based on information discovered during an arrest or search warrant, and they do not cover other crimes besides drug possession. The legislation also requires the federal government to fund public awareness campaigns and training for law enforcement on these protections, and directs the Government Accountability Office to study the law's effectiveness within two years of enactment.
