The Mental Health in Aviation Act of 2024 requires the Federal Aviation Administration to update its medical certification regulations within two years to encourage pilots, air traffic controllers, and other aviation workers to seek mental health treatment and disclose mental health conditions without fear of losing their certifications. The bill authorizes $13.74 million annually from 2025 through 2028 to hire and train additional aviation medical examiners, including psychiatrists, to review mental health cases and reduce backlogs in the special issuance process. It also requires the FAA to conduct annual reviews of mental health medications and policies to approve additional treatments that can be safely prescribed to aviation workers. Additionally, the legislation authorizes $1.5 million per year for the same period to fund a public awareness campaign aimed at reducing stigma around mental health care in the aviation industry and informing workers about available support services.
