The Keep Kids Covered Act would extend continuous health insurance coverage for children enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Currently, newborns deemed eligible for coverage can stay enrolled for one year, and other children can maintain coverage for twelve months; this bill would extend newborn coverage to age 6 and extend coverage for children ages 6 through 18 to twenty-four months of continuous eligibility without requiring families to reverify their income or eligibility. The legislation also requires states to update contact information from enrolled families at least annually and notify them of their coverage status and remaining eligibility period. These changes would affect millions of children nationwide who rely on these federal-state health insurance programs. The bill would take effect one year after it is signed into law, giving states time to adjust their administrative systems to accommodate the longer continuous eligibility periods.
