The School Bus Driver Shortage Relief Act would create a national task force within the Department of Education to address the ongoing shortage of school bus drivers across the country. The task force, made up of 10 to 15 members including representatives from the Departments of Labor and Transportation, labor unions, parent organizations, and civil rights groups, would be established within 60 days of the bill's enactment. Within six months, the task force would publish best practices and guidance for schools and states on improving student transportation and addressing driver shortages, and would submit reports at least every two years analyzing compensation, working conditions, geographic and demographic disparities, and recommending solutions. The Government Accountability Office would also conduct a separate study within two years to recommend federal policy changes. The bill does not authorize specific funding amounts but would require appropriations to pay task force members at the federal GS-12 pay grade level and cover their travel expenses.
