Referred to the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and in addition to the Committees on Natural Resources, and Agriculture, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill establishes a new federal grant program to help communities prepare for and reduce wildfire risk through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Communities can use grants up to $10 million to implement wildfire preparedness projects such as improving early warning systems, creating evacuation plans, hardening homes and critical infrastructure, and managing defensible space around structures, or up to $250,000 to develop comprehensive wildfire resilience plans. The bill prioritizes funding for communities in high-fire-risk areas and requires grant recipients to contribute at least 25 percent of project costs, though this requirement can be waived for low-income communities. The legislation authorizes $1 billion annually from 2024 through 2028 and requires several government studies on wildfire communication systems, insurance incentives for resilient communities, and existing federal wildfire protection programs.
