This bill establishes a new federal grant program to help local law enforcement combat fentanyl and opioid trafficking. The Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services would distribute grants to states, local governments, Indian tribes, and multi-jurisdictional task forces to hire officers, establish or expand task forces, purchase equipment, and conduct related enforcement activities. At least 20 percent of funding must go to Indian tribes and at least 20 percent to multi-jurisdictional task forces, with priority given to applications that create new or expand existing task forces. The bill authorizes $70 million annually for five years, from 2025 through 2029, and requires the COPS Director to report to Congress beginning two years after enactment on the program's effectiveness and recommendations for improvement.
