The We Can't Wait Act of 2026 allows disabled individuals to receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits during the mandatory five-month waiting period that currently applies before benefits begin. Under current law, people approved for disability benefits must wait five months after becoming disabled before receiving any payments, but this bill lets them elect to start receiving reduced benefits during that waiting period if they choose. People who make this election would receive approximately 94.25 percent of their full disability benefit amount starting in the waiting period, with that reduced amount locked in permanently rather than increasing later. The Social Security Administration must update its application forms within 180 days to include this option and create a calculator to help people understand how choosing early benefits would affect their long-term payments. The bill requires the agency to monitor the financial impact on the Disability Insurance Trust Fund every five years and report to Congress if the costs become unsustainable.
