This bill would eliminate the Restaurant Meals Program, which is a state-optional program under SNAP (food stamps) that allows certain eligible individuals—elderly, disabled, and homeless people—to use their benefits to purchase prepared meals at participating restaurants. Currently, states can choose whether to operate this program, and restaurants that participate receive reimbursement at discounted rates. The legislation would remove all legal authority for this program by amending the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. The bill would take effect 180 days after being signed into law, giving states and restaurants a six-month transition period before the program ends. Only a handful of states currently operate restaurant meal programs, so the impact would be limited to those state participants and eligible individuals who depend on this option for meals.
