The Stop Auto Fraud Act of 2026 creates a new federal crime targeting motor vehicle collision fraud. Specifically, it makes it illegal to intentionally cause, stage, fabricate, or simulate a car accident with the goal of submitting false insurance claims for damages, medical treatment, repair costs, or lost wages. The law applies to anyone who knowingly executes or attempts such a scheme and can result in fines and imprisonment of up to 10 years for standard violations, up to 20 years if someone is seriously injured, and life imprisonment if someone dies as a result. Any criminal fines collected under this law will be deposited into the Highway Trust Fund, which finances road and transportation projects.
