The Military Spouse Hiring Act would expand a federal tax credit called the Work Opportunity Credit to include military spouses as eligible employees. Currently, this credit allows employers to reduce their tax liability when they hire workers from specific disadvantaged groups, but military spouses are not among them. Under this bill, companies that hire the spouses of active-duty service members would become eligible to claim the credit, effectively lowering their tax burden for doing so. The bill would take effect immediately upon enactment and apply to spouses hired after the law passes. This bipartisan legislation aims to help military families by making employers more willing to hire military spouses, who often face employment challenges due to frequent relocations required by military service, and would do so without requiring new federal spending.
