The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Inclusion Act of 2026 expands eligibility for federal student loan forgiveness available to public service employees. The bill modifies the rules so that the first 60 monthly loan payments made by public service workers count toward forgiveness regardless of payment amount, whereas previously only larger payments qualified. The legislation also counts payments made during periods when loan repayment is suspended due to administrative forbearance, as long as the borrower was employed in a qualifying public service job during that time. Within 180 days of enactment, the Department of Education must notify all federal student loan borrowers about these changes and explain how to switch repayment plans if desired. The changes apply to borrowers who have made fewer than 120 payments toward public service loan forgiveness, meaning newer borrowers will benefit most from the expanded qualifying payments.
