The Badge-to-Business Act amends federal small business lending programs to help law enforcement officers start businesses after their careers in policing. Under this bill, qualified retired or current law enforcement officers with at least 10 years of service can access SBA express loans without paying the normal guarantee fee that the government typically charges lenders. The law applies to officers who are not under criminal investigation or facing disciplinary proceedings related to their official duties at the time they apply for the loan. The fee waiver takes effect January 1, 2027, though the Small Business Administration can reinstate fees if the cost to the government of these loans exceeds zero in any fiscal year. This legislation aims to support career officers transitioning to entrepreneurship by reducing the upfront costs of starting a business.
