The Lethal Means Safety Training Act directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to update and improve its suicide prevention training course within 180 days of enactment, ensuring it reflects current best practices and is culturally appropriate. The bill requires VA employees who regularly interact with veterans, compensation and pension examiners, Veterans Center staff, and community care providers to complete this training within 90 days of being hired or starting work with the VA, then annually thereafter. Family caregivers receiving VA support must also complete the training on the same schedule. The VA will update the training at least once per year and must publish annual reports showing how many people in each category completed it. The training course will be made publicly available on the VA website, and the VA must consult with mental health experts, suicide prevention specialists, firearms safety instructors, and veterans organizations when developing and updating the program.
