The Stop Corporate Takeovers of Physicians Act of 2026 establishes federal protections to prevent corporations from owning medical practices and controlling physicians' clinical decisions. The bill prohibits direct corporate practice of medicine and requires that any entity owning a medical practice be majority-owned and controlled by licensed physicians or advanced practice providers, with limited exceptions for nonprofits, hospitals, and public health systems. It bans non-compete agreements for physicians and prevents employers or management companies from controlling clinical decisions such as patient time allocation, diagnostic coding, treatment referrals, or admission decisions. The Federal Trade Commission gains enforcement authority to investigate violations as unfair trade practices, while physicians, private parties, and state attorneys general can also sue for remedies including treble damages, attorney fees, and mandatory divestment. States retain the right to impose even stricter protections on medical practice ownership and physician autonomy than those established in this federal law.
