The VETS Access Act would expand the Department of Veterans Affairs' authority to provide mental health care, treatment, and rehabilitation services to veterans with serious mental illness and homeless veterans, even if those veterans don't otherwise qualify for VA hospital, nursing home, or residential care under current eligibility rules. Currently, the VA can only serve certain categories of veterans based on service-connected disabilities and other factors, which may exclude some veterans in crisis. This bill removes those barriers for these two specific populations, allowing the VA to deliver care directly or through contracts with community-based facilities like halfway houses. The changes would take effect 90 days after the bill becomes law. The legislation was introduced by Representatives Golden of Maine and Lawler and referred to the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.
