This bill removes financial barriers that prevent people with disabilities from running for elected office. Currently, individuals receiving federal disability benefits through Social Security can lose or have reduced benefits if they earn income, including from campaign activities. The legislation would require that any work performed by a candidate with disabilities and any compensation they receive during their campaign be disregarded when determining their eligibility for federal disability benefits or state and local programs funded with federal money. The bill applies to people who receive disability benefits under Social Security titles II and XVI and who are running for federal, state, or local office. By protecting these benefits during a campaign, the bill aims to give people with disabilities equal opportunity to pursue elected positions without financial penalty.
