The AID Local Government Leadership Act would create a federal grant program to help small and rural local governments pay for workplace accommodations for elected and appointed officials with disabilities. The bill authorizes $5 million per year from 2027 through 2033 to provide grants ranging from $3,000 to $50,000 annually to eligible local governments, covering costs such as office modifications, specialized software, sign language interpreters, and assistive technology. Eligible recipients are local governments in rural areas, with populations under 10,000, or with populations between 10,000 and 200,000 with poverty rates of 18 percent or higher. Local governments receiving grants must contribute matching funds equal to at least 25 percent of the grant amount and maintain a dedicated accommodation funding account for at least four years after the grant period ends to ensure ongoing support for officials with disabilities. The Department of Labor would administer the program on a first-come, first-served basis and submit annual reports to Congress detailing the program's reach and impact.
