The More Nurses in Rural Schools Act would expand the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program to include school nurses working in health professional shortage areas. Currently, this federal loan repayment program helps health professionals manage student debt in exchange for service in underserved communities, but school nurses are not eligible. This bill changes that by allowing school nurses employed by elementary or secondary schools in designated shortage areas to participate in the program with a minimum two-year service commitment. The legislation accounts for part-time school nurses by requiring them to work the equivalent hours of a full-time position and establishes annual certification to track their hours. At least five percent of annual program funding must be reserved specifically for school nurse participants.
